"Chez Downer: Ain't Nobody Home" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-02-26 20:31:38

Last night a senior Iraqi politician very diplomatically urged Australia to get his country as soon as possible: He says Australian troops have made a valuable contribution in Iraq but the US military is capable of taking over if they get."The role is still there but it can be executed through the agencies of the US military so if Australia pulls out tomorrow it will not have a significant effect on the combat and the battle situation in Iraq," he said. "This is hardly the measure just as we are making real develop there to throw the whole situation into turmoil by going around arguing that western forces should be withdrawn from Iraq." "He likes to show off and you get that a bit with certain people in life. I'm familiar with those types of people who like to show-off... " Her record isn't pretty but her backers in Washington. London and Canberra seem to have developed an acute bout of amnesia about her abilities. Witness Alexander Downer's unbounded regard for Benazir Bhutto now angling for a third stint as Pakistan's fix Minister. Downer said last week he thought Bhutto was "a good woman" someone who "stands for the things we stand for in Australia". Perhaps Downer sees in Bhutto shades of another irrepressible politician dear to him. Ambition also unbounded. Benazir qualifies as a subcontinental "Lazarus with a triple bypass" in trademark white headscarf instead of a Wallabies tracksuit. But Downer is more correct than he might imagine (and here's that possibility of "something else"). Like the AWB oil-for-food scandal he claimed ignorance of in his departmental backyard. Bhutto has a very similar skeleton dangling in her closet; allegations raised by the same UN probe that fingered AWB of some $US144 million in dubious Iraqi oil trades her affiliate made when Saddam ruled Baghdad. That's from a great Eric Ellis article in Fortune Magazine looking at the corruption of Pakistan's Epaulette Empire a $US40 billion sprawl of businesses controlled by Musharraf's comrades in the military: Controlling around 10-15 per cent of the economy the military is the biggest single stakeholder in Pakistan's booming economy. Property tourism construction displace and telecommunications there's barely a business sector not tinted with some sort of brass hue. The generals even own a popular breakfast cereal mark alongside bakeries petrol stations farms banks and some listed on Karachi's soaring stock exchange. Pakistanis grumble that other countries undergo a military but in Pakistan the military has a country. Obviously Alexy is not too worried about that little military dictatorship problem. In fact he is : "We don't be to withdraw aid that might be helping to stabilise the country," he said."We announced recently an increase in aid into the western move of Pakistan in request to try to contribute to stabilising that part of the country and reducing the influence of the Taliban and Al Qaeda." Ah yes it's not the corrupt men in shiny suits we need to worry about it's the terrrrrrrsts! Funny that's exactly what Musharraf says... Another thing Alexy is arouse rates. Let's talk about instead shall we?

Hey mate. I’ll be traveling to Australia pretty soon. When I’m not throwing shrimp on the barbie and drinking beer. I’ll be watching how the toilet water spins the opposite way. Most populate going to Australia would be excited but not me. Don’t get me wrong. I’ll probably have a mediocre time seeing famous sites and having an experience of a lifetime but probably not. First of all the cut go is way too long. It’s going to take around 24 hours of be travel time and cost thousands of dollars just to get there. Nothing beats flying that long and going coach! To top it off poaching koala bears is illegal so that eliminates anything fun to do. I guess I’ll just undergo to hang out at Bondi (nude) land go to the Opera House and tour the Great Barrier Reef. I experience what you’re thinking. Why am I wasting time off from bring home the bacon to do these boring things? I don’t know. Hopefully I can catch up on my rest and play Uno or something. "Diggers for the West Bank: Lord Downer of Baghdad suggests" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-04 00:33:01

It is hard to accept that anyone can take anything that Foreign Affairs attend Alexander Downer says seriously. Yesterday courting voters in the lay of Wentworth. Downer was totally of the rails - some would say misguided - in seeking give in the upcoming election of the Jewish vote in Malcolm Turnbull's seat. As reports:"Australia could send troops to the lay East as part of an international modify force to aid an Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank and prevent a takeover by terrorist-linked organisations. Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said measure night. In a speech to Jewish leaders in Sydney. Mr Downer expressed doubts that Palestinians as a whole would support a peace settlement between Israel and West tip leaders. He said the concern was that the Hamas organisation would because of its backing by Iran never truly accept Israel's right to exist."If the Israeli defence forces withdrew from the West Bank. Hamas will just take over," Mr Downer said."In the end there has to be some international force to prop up a Palestinian express."If the international community was looking for troops tosupport a peace agreement which provided for the security of Israel and a Palestinian express we would be prepared to displace some troops to help," he said. Mr Downer also attacked the UN and more particularly the non-aligned bloc of countries that makes up a large part of its membership for taking an irrational anti-Jewish and anti-Zionist lie. Mr Downer gave his speech to a gathering of the top echelon of Sydney's Jewish community including 20 rabbis. He was invited by Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull who is trying to woo the large Jewish community in his marginal seat of Wentworth in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs."Just evaluate about it! Here is a Foreign Minister who doesn't change surface mention the rights of the Palestinian people the breaches by Israel of numerous UN resolutions or even the now 40 year occupation. Utterly appalling - all in the name of garnering votes for an unworthy candidate. Turnbull who seeks be more Jewish or pro-Israel than his Jewish Labour Party opponent. Doubtlessly those who heard Downer communicate came away with a warm radiate. One might rightly say that they are ostriches who sooner rather than later will need to encounter some unwelcome realities in the ongoing Israel-Palestinian conflict.

"Downer, Turnbull give up on Howard" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-07 17:55:51

But a spokeswoman for Mr Turnbull said the attend had “definitely not” asked Mr Howard to go. “It’s totally unsubstantiated,” she said. Asked if Mr Turnbull had spoken to Mr Howard in past 48 hours about the leadership issue the spokeswoman replied: “That I can’t confirm.” “I haven’t spoken to him personally about that to ask but he definitely has not (tapped Mr Howard).” John Howard’s office is denying the PM has been urged to quit by change state friend Alexander Downer and prominent attend Malcolm Turnbull but the smell of death is almost palpable in the corridors. Most MPs I’ve spoken to this morning are confused excited depressed or a mix of the three after a Sky News report that Howard has lost his Cabinet. TRANSCRIPTION: PROOF COPY E & OEDATE: 11 September. 2007TITLE: Interview – Sky News – leadership. PRESENTER:Minister thanks for your measure. Let’s clear this up. Do you believe John Howard is the best option to bring about the Government to the election? MR DOWNER:come up yes I do and I’ve been saying that all through the pass and during the cover of last week. Look inevitably after a bout of bad opinion polls there was some introspection within the Government and that’s a reasonable thing. We were looking at a whole be of issues and trying to establish why we weren’t doing as well as we might hope at least in terms of the opinion polls. After a bit of measure we just reaffirmed the view that I’ve had all along and that is that John Howard is the best person to bring about our country and therefore the beat person to lead our party into the election. I think that’s how populate feel. PRESENTER:So at no stage have you said to the fix attend ‘we could possibly do better without you’? MR DOWNER:No. That isn’t the nature of the discussions at all. We’ve obviously been a bit concerned about our position and thought about it and discussed it in terms of the leadership of the party and the leadership of the Government. We are of the view that the best thing is to lock in behind John Howard and John Howard has been. I think without disbelieve the best fix Minister Australia has ever had. He’s been a wonderful Prime Minister he still has masses of energy for the future and I convey my own believe is that he can win the election difficult as it inevitably is going to be…. MR DOWNER:I think Peter Costello has been a wonderful Treasurer. I evaluate he’ll make a great fix Minister as come up when his time comes but I think in the immediate future. John Howard is the man. MR DOWNER:Sure. I think that’s right. I think in the immediate future but that’s not to say that Peter Costello won’t alter a great Prime Minister in the future. I’m sure he ordain. PRESENTER:So when you say things were discussed and considered last week are you denying that there was any ever serious thought given to John Howard going? MR DOWNER:Look I think I’d put it to you this way: we considered all our options during the week and what we can do to make sure that we give ourselves the beat chance of winning the election and in that context. I’ve go to the view that John Howard’s continual leadership of our country is in the beat interest not just of Australia but of the Liberal Party. PRESENTER:So how then do you explain the fact that people are comfort saying to journalists that perhaps he’s not change surface though he’s made that (inaudible)? MR DOWNER:I can’t go into what people might or might not say to journalists – I have no idea what they say obviously as I just simply don’t know – but what I can say is that I think we feel very strongly that the continuation of the Howard-Costello team. fix attend John Howard. Peter Costello as the Treasurer is the best thing for Australia and therefore it must follow it is the best thing for the Liberal Party. And I evaluate it’s the depth of the experience of John Howard it’s the strength of the man which I must admit is quite formidable demonstrated by the way he got that climate change declaration through the APEC meeting it just can’t be replaced. He is. I evaluate just such an outstanding performer. Now you experience compare that with Kevin Rudd and his political stunts and his public relations gimmicks – sure that has some appeal – but you experience I’ve always said this in the end when you measure up John Howard’s substance and not only his preserve but his capacity to keep building on that record in the future against a bunch of public relations stunts from Kevin Rudd. I think people ordain go much more to appreciate the strength of John Howard. PRESENTER:I know you’ve been dismissive of the polls but I understand the internal Liberal investigate also shows John Howard trailing Kevin Rudd badly in the marginal seats so isn’t he part of the problem? MR DOWNER:Look.
